In their efforts to switch to greener lifestyle, the managers at Riverside Park in New York City are working on an innovative restroom complex that will use solar power and compost sewage to fertilize the plants. It’s being designed in a way that it will not create any carbon dioxide emissions (which contribute to global warming).
Another major benefit in addition to producing fertilizers is that the restroom complex will use almost no water, as opposed to conventional toilets that use about 3.5 gallons of water per flush.
In addition to building the necessary amenities, the park management wanted to be environmentally responsible in a way that is also economically feasible. So far, $6 million are invested in the restroom complex, which is supposed to serve tens of thousands of people that are using the Hudson Riverwalk.
The project, called Green Outlook will include in addition to public restrooms, a solar-powered, eco-friendly park maintenance building. The project recently got a major boost in the form of a $50,000 grant, aimed to cover the costs of more than 90 percent of the solar panels needed for the facility, from Green Mountain Energy.
One interesting aspect is the plan to make the complex a completely off-grid project. So, not only will it be off the sewer grid, it will also be off the electric grid, which will make it independent of city power.
The user friendly design will include, among other things: sustainable materials, including recycled and local items such as a driftwood slat screen; planted rooftops to minimize storm water runoff; and recycled aggregate concrete, which reduces CO2 emissions created during cement manufacturing.
